Born during WWII, Burckhard spent his childhood in East Germany. As a teenager, he moved to the Netherlands to attend a missionary school before completing his schooling and military service in West Germany. After meeting and falling in love with his future wife, Lynn, as a pen pal, he moved to California in 1963. While he and Lynn started their family, Burckhard earned his Ph.D in Linguistics at UC Berkeley.
Burckhard began teaching at CSU Dominguez Hills in 1970. He was passionate about helping his students and continued teaching even after his retirement. He was also a music lover and enjoyed playing Renaissance music on his collection of recorders. Together with his family, Burckhard went on many camping trips. A summer-long journey from California to Alaska and back by car, ferry and train was an absolute highlight.
After Lynn's passing in 1996, Burckhard started a new chapter of life with his companion, Elayne. They enjoyed spending time with family, drinking coffee, going to concerts and on international trips before she passed away in 2015.
Burckhard is survived by his daughter Esther; son Michael and wife Connie; grandchildren Sarah, Devon and Amber; grandson Benjamin and wife Yana; as well as brothers Henning and Egbert and their families. He will be remembered by Elayne's children Ralph, Sam, Marilen and Jon, grandson Avery and their families.
Burckhard had a kind and generous heart and will be dearly missed by his family and friends across the world.
