Born November 19, 1919, Charlotte Ruth Barber left this world on October 22nd, 2015. She resided in Torrance and she died in Torrance as she wanted it.
In 1927, her father, Roy Eugene Thompson drove his wife, Mary Ethel Thompson (née Baskett), out here to California from Oklahoma in a brand new 1927 Model T Ford with, at that time, 7 children. Eventually Roy and Mary Ethel had 9 children total: Oma Odessa, Romie Augustus, Hazel Irene, Delford Eugene, Percy Leroy, Isabell Lucille, Alvin Neal, Charlotte Ruth, and William Ernest Thompson.
Charlotte was married to one man, John William Barber, for 55 years. John was born August 26th, 1917 and passed away September 12th, 1990. Charlotte and John had 3 children, Jack Wayne, Ronald William, and Michael Arthur Barber. She had 7 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren; many close and loving nieces and nephews; lots of great-nieces and -nephews; a few great-great-nieces and -nephews; and cousins by the dozens. Charlotte also had a legion of friends who loved her dearly and she loved them all deeply. Her family was so precious to her - just a tad behind the Lord. It was hard to believe that so much love and caring and understanding could be fit in her petite, 5'2", beautiful body.
Mrs. Barber would very, very often say she lived a good long life thanks to the Lord and her family and friends. She said she got to see a few places and she got to meet and love so many people.
For sure, we cannot forget "Charlotte the Red" adored her gambling, as anyone who knew her would say. She loved the casinos, Keno, Bingo, and many other games of chance. Charlotte lived her life on her own terms but she was always ready and available to assist family and friends.
Lady, you'll be missed but you will never, ever be forgotten. May you rest in peace and dwell by your Lord, Pretty Red.
