Christopher Roland Furtado was born in Bombay, India, on March 20, 1958, and grew up in Goa. One of the early Goans to settle in Los Angeles, Roland was truly a Goan at heart, providing an apt Konkani adage should the occasion demand. Roland enjoyed cooking, and a perfectly layered bebinca was his pièce de résistance. Roland enjoyed entertaining his friends with great food, retiring to a vintage cognac, a perfect cigar and debating world affairs.
In 1999 he married the love of his life, his “sweets”, Ligaya (Joy) Tolentino Furtado and was immediately adopted and embraced by a large contingent of in-laws.
Roland was a go-getter, his high energy, can-do attitude held him good stead over the 30 years that he singlehandedly created and led a successful freight forwarding company to many accolades and recognition.
Roland attended military school in India, was extremely well read, organized and disciplined, frequently recommending “Boot camp” for a mildly errant nephew. His larger than life personality, tenacious debating and endlessly quoting statistical facts will be sorely missed by his friends who often gathered and reveled in Roland’s high energy aura.
Weekends would find Roland either solving an impossible project at work, helping friends or glued to a much-anticipated boxing match on TV.
Roland was the eldest of seven brothers Anthony Roy (deceased), Edgar, Osler, Darryl, Stein, Caesar. His Mother: Susana Furtado, lives in Toronto, Canada.
Throughout his three-year battle with brain cancer Roland kept a positive attitude and was in high spirits, careful not to burden his caregivers. Roland succumbed to the debilitating disease, passing gently in the arms of his wife, on July 3rd, 2018.
