He was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania and eventually moved to Long Beach where he grew up with his father and then later in Gardena where he spent time with his aunt and cousins. He was inspired to be a pharmacist by a family friend, and eventually opened up Meiji Pharmacy in Gardena on December 12, 1977.
He was known to cure his clients not just by medicine, but with his infectious sense of humor, welcoming attitude, and comforting nature. Cliff remembered every customers’ name and always offered them a hot cup of coffee, candy, and a seat in his recliners.
When he wasn’t in the pharmacy, you could find Cliff fishing with his close friends in Parker Lake. We like to believe that he is there currently enjoying a cold beer and enjoying the views.
He will be known for his love of Marie Callender’s blueberry cream pie, any sweet dessert treats given by customers, shoyu and ketchup rice, but most importantly, his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, his children Nicole, Brandon, and Akemi, grandchildren Kyan, Leila, and Rylan, and the many loyal customers that visited his pharmacy just to talk to him.
Clifford Yamashita is now peacefully laid to rest in Green Hills Memorial in Rancho Palos Verdes.
