On March 10, 1964 at 8:57 am, Darryl Louis Martin was born to Edith M. Martin and Arthur L. Martin at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. He was the youngest of two sons.
As a youngster, Darryl was very mischievous and loved animals. He would bring home strays to include dogs, lizards, spiders, bugs and birds. His mother would often get a “surprise” when washing his clothes. He would hear her shriek and with a big grin on his face say, “Momma they won’t hurt you. They are my friends.” We will miss that big beautiful smile and his laughter.
At a young age, Darryl learned to love the Lord and believed in the Pentecostal teachings of the Bible. He was very proficient in the Bible and the interpretation of its meaning.
Darryl’s formal education was in the Los Angeles public school system and he attended Carson High School where he played football.
In 1988, Darryl joined the U.S. Army and served until 1994. He was a Medical Specialist and was stationed in multiple places in the U.S and Europe. He served in both the Desert Storm and Somalia conflicts and received many awards and commendations as well as the Bronze Star during his tour of duty.
Fondly known as “Doc”, Darryl travelled to several foreign countries and acquired a taste for exotic dining. He would experiment with exotic spices and seasonings and wasn’t afraid to try new cuisine. He also loved to cook. Darryl also answered to the name of “BIL” as was given to him as a term of endearment by his sister-in-law, Darlene.
Darryl had a love for working on classic cars and assessing the value of them. He was an avid reader who also wrote beautiful poetry that he wished to publish one day. He always enjoyed live entertainment like plays, poetry reading and concerts where he would get down with the music. He would often take his mother to these events and together they had a great time.
In 2016, Darryl moved to Memphis, Tennessee to be with his father, Arthur L. Martin (who preceded him in death on March 8, 2020) and others of his family. Darryl continued to live in Memphis for four years and added to his circle of friends and grew closer to his family.
Darryl was a very gregarious person who was full of life, love and laughter. For many years he stayed connected to his family both near and far. You might get a call or visit at any time “just because”. He loved his family and was a true communicator. He will be missed by family, friends and all that knew him.
Darryl leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Edith M. Martin (nee Fuller) of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Michael E. Martin (Darlene) of Inglewood, CA; sister, Iesha Caraway of Lufkin, TX; daughter, Tiffany Nicole Martin of Los Angeles, CA; son, Alonzo Isaiah McClish-Martin of Avondale, AZ; Aunt Bobbie and Uncle Luther Stewart of Palmdale, CA; Aunt Naomi Cartwright of Santa Rosa, CA; Nieces: Christina Martin of Nashville, TN, Ryann Martin of Los Angeles, CA and Ilyeaha Caraway of Lufkin, TX; Nephew: Kaylun Caraway of Lufkin, TX and a host of grand nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
