OBITUARY

Dorothy "Dottie" Adams

May 22, 1926July 22, 2012

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother on July 22, 2012 at the age of 86, after succumbing to cancer. Dottie was born May 22, 1926 in Long Beach, CA to Henry and Harriett Smith. After a childhood she always described as wonderful, Dottie graduated from Jordan High School in 1943. She married the love of her life, Charles Adams, on March 9, 1947, and settled down in Torrance, CA in 1949, never moving from their "first home." During World War II, Dottie proudly worked as a "Rosie the Riveter." After leaving Vultee Aircraft, she operated elevators at the Long Beach Hilton Hotel---a job she loved, since it allowed her to meet dashing military officers. Later in life, she worked for Gentelco Credit Union in Long Beach where she retired after more than 20 years. In retirement, Dottie busied herself with family and friends, traveling, gardening, cooking (no magazine recipe was safe from her scissors), and volunteer work. She especially enjoyed volunteering at Torrance Memorial Hospital, where she provided 17 dedicated years of service, until the time of her death. Dottie had three daughters who brought her much joy, and it was devastating for her to lose her eldest, Sandy Gonzales, to cancer in 2004. She was also preceded in death by her husband, after 50 years of marriage, in 1998. In addition to her daughters, Sharyl Page (John) and Stephanie Jacobsen, she is survived by grandchildren Paul Gonzales (Khiana), Bryan Knox (Andrea), Michelle Gonzales, Josh Page (Letta), Jon Gonzales (Kerry), Jenny Hampton (Jason), Jennifer Knox, and Anthony, Gabriel, and Armando Jacobsen. She took pride in being a great grandmother to Shane and Seger Hampton, Ana Sofia Gonzales, and Mady Barleben. Services will be at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Lomita, CA on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 10:00 A.M., followed by interment at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, CA. While flowers are appreciated, donations may also be made to the American Cancer Society. Please access www.halversonstonemyers.com for details.

I lived across the street from the Adams from the time I was born in 1965 until age 2. "Dot - Dot" as I would call her was like a second mother to me. My memories are so full of love for her. And seeing that this was all before the age of 2 and the loving memories are still so vivid; she was indeed a special woman. I would play at her house everyday in the kitchen in "my drawer". I'm 47 now but I will always be grateful to Dot for showing such love to me. She lives on in my heart.

Chuck and Dottie were my parents' neighbors for years. Through the years mom and Dottie became best friends. In recent years they would check on one another by making sure they were up and going every morning...the opened curtain was their signal. There were days when the phone would ring and Dottie would be on the other end telling mom "come to your door" then Dottie would come across the street with a chocolate cake or a wonderful home cooked meal for dinner. Dottie knew how much Fred liked sweets...as she would leave after dropping off a treat Fred would tell her "thank you for the goodies Dottie". One day about a week and a half ago Dottie called mom to make sure she was home...next thing you know there they were, at the door, with a lemon meringue pie...one of mom's favorites. Thank you Dottie for watching out for my mom she misses you so much and thanks for the goodies.
Our hearts are heavy..you have our deepest sympathies.

Over the years Dottie has meant many things to many people. We were best friends and closer than many sisters, We cried together in sadness - we laughed together and enjoyed the friendships of our co volunteers at Torrance Memoral Medical Center for about 18 years. She was another "Gramma" to my Grand-daughter and her husband . She was another great gramma to my great grandson. All of us will sorely miss her. We know she is at peace with her beloved husband, Chuck, and daughter , Sandy. God decided he needed another angel in heaven - he has the best now.
We will forever cherish the love you brought to us.

Much love and many blessings to Sharyl, Stef, Jen and all the family.
