Hunter, Evelyn L. 86, a 63 year resident of Redondo Beach, in spirit if not in fact, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Born in Brookville PA, she came west with her family in 1946. As the wife of Donald C. Hunter (died 2002) and daughter of Armena and Gleason Barr, she helped run their hamburger stand the Tumble Inn and Don Hunter Chevron Service on Torrance Blvd.
Keeping books for the family business allowed her enough time to belong to numerous clubs and associations. Redondo Women's Club, Republican Women's Club, Las Vecinas and many years as a volunteer at South Bay Hospital. She loved a good sermon and for many years attended St. Andrews Presbyterian, Church of Religious Science, Redondo First Methodist Church and St. Marks Presbyterian Church.
A passable bridge player ("You would think I would be better at it by now."), cross-word puzzler ("I don't do Sunday's, too hard.") and all around great wife and mother ("The hardest part of growing older is watching your children's hair turn grey."). She inspired in her children the love of learning by reading, listening to lectures, going to plays and traveling throughout the world.
Her musical tastes changed gradually over the years, from pop to show tunes to country western. She liked being with people, especially those who made her laugh.
She and Don had an active social life and in their later years they continued to enjoy a small circle of friends. She was a gentle spirit with a wonderful sense of humor and shared many joys with her children and grandchildren, all of whom enjoyed the comforts of grandma's house which was the center of her world.
Evelyn's great love of family and her generous and kind nature will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by sons Jack (Monica) of San Luis Obispo, Gary of Redondo Beach; daughters Barbara (Allen) Maddox and Beverly (Scott) Reynolds of Redondo Beach. Grandchildren Amy Maddox, Dylan and Matt Reynolds, Jennifer St. Pierre, Sheryl Alderman, Shannon Bluth, Jennifer Heck, and 10 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at White & Day Colonial Chapel on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 11:00 A.M.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or your favorite charity in Evelyn's name.
