James Howard Lightfoot was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 3, 1944 to Vivian and George Lightfoot. He was the fourth of six children in the family. He passed peacefully in his home in Lomita, California on April 26, 2026.
Jim was raised in the seaside community of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. in a white waterfront home adorned with a white picket fence, a dock and beautiful flourishing gardens. This idyllic setting led to his lifelong affinity for the water. He was a towhead blonde during his youth with striking hazel eyes and a sweet smile and grew to be over six feet tall. He developed an early passion for boating and water skiing. He was known in the neighborhood as one of the best. Known for his Slalom, Barefoot, Knee Boarding, Trick and Pyramid skiing. Alongside his brother George he took great pride in teaching their sisters to water ski, creating treasured family memories that would endure for generations. Known for his vibrant spirit, Jim delighted in attending parties and hosting parties at his home, where he was admired for his effortless charm and signature dance moves, ie: the mashed potato, twist, and the boogaloo (dances of the 60’s).
Following shortly after his graduating High School, Jim enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served as a Green Beret during the Vietnam War. After completing his service, he continued his passion for flying.
Within a year of returning home from the Army, inspired by the era's spirit of possibility and perhaps by the enduring refrain of California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and Papas along with The Beach Boys, Surfin USA and California Girls. These songs beckoned Jim along with a close circle of friends, to set out to sunny California. There he embraced a dynamic and adventurous life filled with surfing, flying, and racecar driving.
A man of remarkable skill and curiosity, Jim had a deep and abiding passion for all things mechanical. This devotion led him to establish his own business, Lightfoot's Garage, a source of great pride and accomplishment. For a time, he also operated and owned the Cigar Emporium, further reflecting his entrepreneurial spirit.
In the first few years of his business, Jim met the love of his life. She was a customer who brought her sports car in for repairs. She was a beautiful petite young woman by the name of Camille Wermuth. That chance meeting was the beginning of their loving relationship of 47 years together. Though they had no children, there home was filled with the companionship of many dogs and cats thru the years, which they loved dearly. Together they shared a love of travel, visiting such places as Hawaii, and England. They found great joy in dining out and savouring life's simple pleasures side by side.
In his later years, Jim cultivated a great appreciation for history and art, spending many fulfilling hours reading and visiting historic museums and libraries.
