Janice M Weston (born Janie Mae McCrary) was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 17, 1943, to Daisy McCrary and James Gordon Jr. After losing her mother at a young age, Janice's paternal grandmother, Lovey Everlena Gordon, nurtured her to maturity. After matriculating Luther Judson Price High School in 1961, Janice graduated from Blayton School of Accounting in 1963. She then attended Georgia State University. Working at radio station WERD, the first Black owned Atlanta radio station, she met and worked with many popular classic R&B singers. As an employee at The Birdcage, a restaurant/night club, Janice met Gene Nichols. They were married on June 2, 1968, and had one child, Gena Roshana Nichols.
Janice's employment included Honeywell, Inc., Management Science America, Inc., and the US Government. Her professional accounting career began in 1970, with the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (1970-1983) and the High Museum of Art (1984-1986). She met John D Weston at MARTA in 1978. They dated and married on October 10, 1981. The couple relocated to the San Francisco, California Bay Area in 1986. Janice continued as an accountant with the Santa Fe Pacific Realty Corp (1986-1988) and SIMCO Restaurants, Inc. (1989-1991). In 1992 she sadly lost her husband to a year-long battle with stomach cancer. Janice completed her career as an Administrative Project Manager for the Community Development Corporation of California.
A proud Baptist Christian, Janice was truly grounded in the church. In Atlanta she was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, under Pastor Doctor Melvin Watson for over 15 years. After moving to Oakland, California, Janice continued membership at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Revelation Baptist Church and finally 7th Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, where she was the Director of Christian Education. Janice's diverse expertise often led her to speak, teach, direct programs and prepare meals for many church functions.
Left to cherish Janice's memory is daughter, Gena Nichols. Other beloved Atlanta family members who mourn her passing are Gwendolyn D. Adams-Evans (Moon), Larry J. Adams (Vivian), Cynthia Adams-Pierce (Wayne), Ronald L. Adams (Brenda), Annette McKnight (Emmitt) and Pearl L. Adams, Sonya Lowe (Phillip), Andrea Evans-Northern (Eric) and Zenita Waldon. She leaves a host of dear friends, notably Elzadie Smith who has been a true lifelong sister. May Janice's gracious 73 year legacy be an example for others to emulate as she now rests in eternal peace.
