I met Jon in 2012.  My daughter Rachel was getting married to her fiance Ryan.  They told me they had asked Jon to marry them.  As the mother of the bride I was intrigued as to why they selected Jon.  In my lifetime I can list only a handful of people that I felt at ease with immediately, Jon was one of those people.  On the day of the wedding he assured me that I was not to worry, he had everything under control and he motioned to my son-in-law and his groomsmen.  He was right.  He spoke such beautiful words all about love and commitment.  Some he told me had had borrowed from his Dad, who had married another couple.  I was truly touched by what he had chosen to say.  I chose this picture because something has set the three of them off as Jon tries to maintain control.  After the wedding I sent Jon a personal thank you expressing our gratitude for such a wonderful service.  Below is Jon's response.
Hi Laurie, 
I got your card last night, thanks so much for the compliments and kind wishes!  
It was a great weekend, a lovely wedding, and I was honored to be a part of it.  It's not everyday you get to hitch two of your best friends!
When I first started the Rugby team in College, Rachel was THE very first person to respond to my ads, and became my partner in crime getting that up and running from day one.  (With all of the attendant friendships, shared experiences, a relationship or three, and now a marriage that has entailed!)  And, as I'm fond of saying, Ryan quickly became like the annoying younger brother I never had.  😉   
At any rate, it was my pleasure to do the ceremony, and I am pleased to hear that I did it adequate justice.  
And never fear, Rob has already threatened to invite me back to help finish the leftover Pimm's Cup, so I'm sure we'll see each other again soon!

This breaks my heart to see that Wubbels has passed away! He was the life and soul of the party when at SFSU and helped me and some friends set up the Gators rugby team which is still going today. 
Such a kind and loving soul, someone you could have a great laugh with too. We reconnected back in covid times after more than a decade with what ended up being a 2-hr video call, talking about how the world had got into the state it had, the amount of fun we had at uni, and where our lives have taken us.
It's so sad we won't get to see each other again, but I hope you're doing well in your next chapter buddy x

Jonathan was a humorous,  kind, generous, and caring man. I miss him and with difficulty write these  words of remembrance. The proverb "In the morning the dogs will bark, but the caravan moves on" reminds us that life's journey continues despite the setbacks we may encounter. I can only take counsel from this old proverb. It does not assuage the grief, sadness, and the hole in my soul. Jonathan's death is a double loss . It is the loss of both the sweet, kind, person he was, and the life that could have been. 

As I recall times we had together, as a curious child with a fondness for books and stories, his later prodigious reading propensity, loyalty to the All Blacks and proud display of the rugby jersey I brought back from New Zealand, his profound joy and limitless patience being Logans father, his appreciation of medieval and Roman history, and his sunny disposition. His ukelele that accompanied us on an ill-fated Rubicon Jeep trip.  His uke backed the version of River Deep, Mountain High which was our theme song. His family reunion picture with a barf bucket when both he and I got tagged with the norovirus.

When Jon was about 7, we spent an overnight house-sitting for a friend.  He went into the well-stocked library for something to read, and came up with his choice which was The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.  Whether that book kindled his later degree in medieval history is perhaps an open question we will now never know.

He leaves behind his wife Lauren and son Logan. Logan has a warm nurturing family and I know Lauren and her mother Colleen care deeply for him.

Goodbye my sweet son. I will miss you forever.

Wubbs was a good friend to many, all who will tell you that Jon was uber intelligent, creative, athletic, empathetic, and musical. He excelled at rugby, built a boat by hand, played multiple instruments, and read innumerable books about myriad topics, both fact and fiction. He loved his son, loved his mom and dad, and loved his friends. Jon had few, if any enemies. In fact, he was such a social creature that he encouraged old friends make an effort to mingle with any new acquaintences, assuring everyone was included in the gang- no one was left out. I know this to be true because I’ve met a great deal of people through Jon.

Jon’s dad, helped my father out with forensic accounting before we were born, and our moms were pregnant around the same time. We were friends in utero. He was born a month before me, and we grew up in the same town, friends for life. Endless escapades ensued, like when we went to Disneyland together and played with our pirate pistols at the fort on Tom Sawyer Island, or when we trashed Christmas one year and both punished  

A great deal of our childhood rites of passage, good and bad, were shared events. There were so many that to name them all would take weeks: 1989 earthquake, plethora of sleepovers, birthday parties, boogie boarding at the beach, summers at great america, trips to beach-boardwalk, and lots of artistic collaborations.  Jon was my first songwriting partner in our rap group JRW (Jon+Rob+Witmeyer/Wubbels).  He was the best man at my wedding, and gave an epic speech that was just perfection. 

There is a huge void left in the wake of Jon’s passing, and this world is much less beautiful without his contributions, humor, friendship, and wit. I’m not religious, I am not spiritual. I’m not going try to tell you I know where his soul currently resides. I will tell you, if anyone has a soul, it’s Wubbels, and I trust his atoms will spread far and wide, completing the circle of life. I wish him all the best in whatever comes next.

This is how I’ll remember you, Won Jubbels! A funny, goofy dude. You were a great friend. You won’t be forgotten.

I am saddened by the news of Jon's passing.  I was a schoolmate of Jon's many years ago and can still see his smile and hear his laugh...it was ever present in the halls. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Jon’s passing has been such a huge loss.  His humor, intelligence, creativity, and love for the people in his life were what defined him.  We had many good times, and one of my favorite memories is when we would watch Jeopardy together, and Jon could answer so many questions!!  I always liked when Jon would grab his guitar or ukelele and play a tune or two. And he would always chop the onions or vegetables when I was preparing dinner!! 
Logan loved him so much and the two of them had many great times together.  My family will miss him and until we meet again, I hope we can keep his memory still wigglin’ as he would say.
