Joseph Lyle McCrea

June 12, 1924 - April 6, 2008

Joseph Lyle McCrea was born in 1924 to Merrill and Clara McCrea (known as Mac and Cleo) in Fruitland, Washington, and part of the Yakima and Spokane Indian tribe. Surviving the depression, he was a South Bay resident for 60 years. Known as a happy and gentle man, he was loved by all who knew him.

Joe was a 58 year member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Golden Age, Knights of Columbus and a World War II Veteran. He was a barber by trade in the South Bay for 37 years. Joe loved fishing, skiing, boating, camping and his family. He amazed all around him and became known as "The Man with Nine Lives," surviving many health obstacles throughout his life.

Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary, of 54 years. Survivors include three sons, William, Michael and Mark, daughter-in-law Debra, Grandchildren Hannah and Chaytn, extended family and heartfelt friends, Dennis, Pat, Peter, Steve and his loving and loyal dog, Ginger.

He will be greatly missed by those who love him. Finally at peace and back with Mary.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at White & Day Colonial Mortuary in Redondo Beach on Thursday April 10, 2008 from 5 to 9pm. A Vigil will begin at 7pm. Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach on Friday April 11 at 10am. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
