Joyce Ann Walski was born on June 19, 1934 in Denver Colorado. Although she would always love the mountains, her family, Minnie and Ernest Cito and sister Edith packed up the car and moved to Los Angeles when she was three years old. Joyce grew up in the city of angels, enjoying family gatherings of all the military cousins and friends that came to her house for Italian dinners and parties. She attended Fremont High School and competed with her drill team, wrote beautiful poetry, volunteered as a Red Cross Grey Lady, and had great times with her many close friends. She was overjoyed when she became an aunt to her sister Edith’s son Gary.
After graduation, she went to work as an Executive Secretary, first at Goodyear (where she got to ride in the blimp) and then at Northrop. Joyce met her handsome husband Warren at Northrop, where she worked for nine years, and married him on April 29, 1961. Their first daughter Lisa arrived the next March, with Gina following three years later. Joyce was a natural teacher and imparted her love of reading and learning to her daughters at an early age. When Gina was diagnosed with being profoundly deaf, Joyce and Warren jumped in action. She drove Gina first to the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angeles, and later to Oralingua School in Whittier. She worked at Oralingua, raising money at the school’s thrift shop during school hours, and at a local credit union. Her amount of volunteerism and teaching was inspiring.
As her children grew and went to college, Joyce and Warren were able to pursue their love of travel. They toured all around the United States and Europe, while enjoying many trips with their children and friends, including cruises, ski trips and many visits to their second home in Palm Desert. Her family grew, with Gary’s three children, Teak, Tawny, and Cory, and then their three grandchildren, Blaire, Brett and Carter Frei. She loved these children with all her heart, and spent many hours being with them and taking them on trips.
Joyce worked for over 10 years as a Teacher’s Aide for children with disabilities. She was a natural teacher and loved helping her kids to thrive. After retiring from the school system, she went to work at a property management company, because she loved keeping busy. She was remarkably organized and whipped the office into shape.
Joyce loved music and dancing, and played Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra while singing along. Warren and Joyce celebrated 61 wonderful years of marriage. Joyce loved her family fiercely and hosted many gatherings for them and their friends. Everyone remembers her reminding them to bring a sweater or jacket, “Just in case.” Joyce gained her angel wings on January 3, 2023, with her family around her, playing music, praying and telling her how very much she was loved. Joyce loved greatly and was dearly loved.
