June Edna Whitt was born in Wisconsin on September 24, 1921. When she was two years old, her mother Mary and older sister Elaine moved to Torrance to live with her beloved grandparents. Torrance was much different then; there were fields peppered with oil wells to run and play in. There were plenty of animals around the yard. She got her love of animals from her grandpa. She never met an animal she wouldn’t talk to and personalize by giving them a name. She graduated from Torrance High School in 1939. The picture above was taken at her 55th High School Reunion. After graduation, she went to work for the City of Torrance as a clerk and PBX operator. During WW II, she enlisted in the Navy as a WAVE but had to resign because she suffered from asthma. It was while working at the City, that she met Ralph S. Perkins. They married on February 22, 1950. One of June’s greatest joys in life was her fellowship with the members of the First Christian Church of Torrance. She sang in the choir for years, led the “Joy” group of Women Disciples, served as an Elder, worked on the newsletter, attended retreats, special programs and much more. Although she is deeply missed by those of us left behind, we rejoice that she is with Ralph and in the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ.
A Celebration of Life for June will be held Friday, September 10, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Halverson, Stone & Myers Mortuary, 1223 Cravens Ave, Torrance, CA 90501.
