On May 18, 1926 in Garland City, Arkansas, a lovely daughter was born to the late John and Daisy Hector. Mae was the seventh of eight children born to this union. As a teenager Mae experienced motherhood giving birth to her first daughter, Daisy. Around the age of 17, Mae had found herself in love with a young man by the name of Alexander Howell. They decided to move to California, get married and begin a family together. They shared the joy of having five children: Alexander, Patricia, Kay, Shirley and Alex. After many years the two went their separate ways and Mae went on to have two more children: Elmo and Freddie. Mae found a passion for the medical field as a Nurse's Assistant while attending school to become a LVN. Unfortunately, Mae was unable to complete school for certification as a LVN due to an illness which would soon change her life. Along the way, she met Dempsey Bullock who became her life mate. In 1962 they purchased a home at 1755 w. 23rd Street and that is where she watched her family expand by more than three generations.
Mae enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed taking the boat out and going fishing. In her pass time she would attend auctions where she would collect antique furniture and much more. Mae loved to play music around the house as she cooked, cleaned or just because she felt good. She was known to play BB King, Etta James, Lena Horne, Bobby Blue Bland and Nancy Wilson, just to name a few. As a young lady, Mae accepted Christ as her Lord & Savior. She was a faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Mae departed this life on January 15, 2010. She was preceded in death by her life mate, Dempsey Bullock; her mother, Daisy Hector; her father, John Hector; her sons, Alex Howell (Big) and Alexander G. Howell (Buddy); and her daughter, Shirley Robinson. Mae leaves to cherish her loving memory, four daughters: Daisy Hall, Patricia Howell, Kay Dupree and Freddie Polian; one son, Elmo Johnson (Little); forty six grandchildren; eighty great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Hector; one sister, Tree Ola Robinson; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.
