Born April 23, 1946, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Mervin and Birdie Hundley. The young family traveled extensively with oil rig crews for the first eight years of Richard’s life. When Richard was three, his brother, Donald Lee Hundley, was born in San Antonio, Texas. Another blessing came with the birth of their sister, Linda Jean, on July 5, 1951. Eventually, the family settled in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where Richard's father served and retired after 50 years with Phillips 66.
Richard was an avid outdoorsman and achieved the high honor of Eagle Scout. He excelled in swimming, competing in the President’s Cup Regatta, and became a state champion with his relay team. In his senior year of high school (1964), he earned All-American honors as the 19th-ranked swimmer in the nation for the 100-yard backstroke. His dedication and talent earned him the largest scholarship awarded to a freshman at the University of Kansas (KU).
While attending Bartlesville Wesleyan College, Richard met the love of his life, Priscilla Snook. They fell in love and were married in June 1967. After two years, they both graduated from college and started their ministry together.
Their first ministry assignment was in Kennewick, Washington, where they sadly lost their first child, Lisa Dawn, in 1970.
From 1971 to 1982, Richard and Priscilla nurtured a beautiful church family in Klamath Falls, Oregon, where Richard was not only a beloved pastor but also a friend and outdoorsman embraced by the entire community. Their home was blessed with the birth of their first son, John Hundley, on November 13, 1971. Three years later, they were blessed with another gift to their lives, Joel Hundley, born on November 8, 1974. Life was full with two active boys involved in soccer, archery, and church activities.
Richard was a faithful servant of the Lord, continuing his ministry in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and La Puente, California, where their daughter, Kristin, was born on January 22, 1985. She brought joy and a special touch to their family.
Richard partnered with John C. Maxwell's ministry at Skyline Wesleyan Church in Lemon Grove, California, where he served as Congregational Pastor for seven years. During this time, he and his team launched a series of recovery programs that served individuals dealing with addiction (AA), grief, codependency, and abuse. Many cherished memories were made during this time, as his three children grew up involved in water polo, swimming, and soccer. Richard, always a compassionate listener, shared his wisdom and offered peace to those he counseled.
Richard’s last formal role as pastor was at Metro Church in Santa Monica, California. There, he and Priscilla thrived in ministry, recovery work, discipleship, and being a father and mother figure to a young congregation.
Richard and Priscilla found immense joy in their family, witnessing the marriages of their three children:
- John and Michelle Hundley
- Joel and Jamie Hundley
- Kristin and Patrick Jacobson
Together, they celebrated their 10 grandchildren, whom they cherished dearly.
In 2009, Richard and Priscilla moved to San Gabriel, where they grew closer as best friends, enjoying long walks, holding hands, and sharing Jesus’ love with everyone they encountered. They continued this precious time together until 2022, when they moved to Torrance. Living near the ocean was a delight for Richard, and he enjoyed participating in the Pier to Pier swim for four years.
After a brief illness, Richard peacefully went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2024. His family lovingly witnessed his passing, knowing he lived and died with grace and faith, leaving behind a legacy as their hero, pastor, father, Papa, and best cheerleader. Though they miss him deeply, they take comfort in knowing he is worshiping his Savior, and they look forward to reuniting with him in eternity.
