Pearl Marie Standish, a 59 year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 in Manhattan Beach. She was born in Pierpont, South Dakota to Gudrun and Knute Oveross and graduated from Pierpont High School. Following school she moved to Washington and then Oregon where she married, finally settling in Manhattan Beach in 1952 where they raised 3 daughters. Pearl was 86 when she died.
Pearl loved company and was known to welcome everyone into her home. It was not uncommon to see cars come and go and motor homes parked in the driveway for periods of time - friends, neighbors and relatives were always welcome. She enjoyed BBQ's every weekend, year round, and looked forward to the holidays knowing she would have a full house. She devoted her life to caring for her handicapped daughter Joyce who at age 61 passed away in July. She was a 30-yr member of the Manhattan Heights Sr. Adults Exercise Class and made numerous friends there. She walked her neighborhood and talked to everyone along the way. Her earlier hobbies included knitting afghans, baby blankets, sweaters and beautiful bedspreads for everyone, as well as gardening at which she had an incredible green thumb. She was an avid reader until her failing eyesight curbed that hobby. She was passionate for football and basketball and her game shows at night at which we would all yell out our answers. She enjoyed traveling, especially to Norway, her family's homeland. Add'l trips included Victoria, BC; a Mediterranean cruise; the Mexican Riviera; and several houseboat trips where she swam, played cards, relaxed and listened to her favorite oldies but goodies on the boom box.
Pearl is survived by her daughter, Shirley Treuden of Gardena, CA; daughter, Cheryl Stidham (Jerry) of El Dorado Hills, CA; 2 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister and brother, Helen Overos and Ed Overos; and many nieces and nephews. Her siblings, Grace Overos, Nathal Overos and Leonard Overos; daughter, Joyce; son-in-law, Roger Treuden; and husband, Fred "Bus" Standish of 46 years, preceded her in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan Beach on Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at 1pm with a celebration of life reception to follow.
