Robert Chase Doughrity, was fondly referred to as “Bob or Chick” by family and friends. November 3, 1932, he was born from the union of Chase Pruitt and Mary Willie Tumpkin in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1944 he was adopted by Abraham William Doughrity Sr, who married Mary Tumpkin. He was the fourth child out of 8 children; four brothers John (deceased), George (deceased), Abraham (deceased), Samuel (deceased), and three sisters Exia, Louise, and Alberta (deceased).
Immediately after attending high school in Detroit, Michigan, he worked for the United States Postal Office until he was inducted into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge he began working for the State of Michigan’s Administration Office, as an accounting clerk. He was a diligent worker great with numbers! He put himself through college at night as he worked during the day, and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. His accounting career consisted of working for Universal Studios from 1965 until 1977 and the United States Air Force from 1977 until he retired in 1997. Throughout his career he always kept a second job doing bookkeeping for various companies and organizations.
In 1957, Bob met Carrie Herndon through an old high school neighborhood friend. The two hit it off immediately and were married on September 5, 1959. On January 5, 1961, they gave birth to a son, Dameion Doughrity (deceased). Bob was adventurous and always looked for ways to improve his family’s life. In 1962, Bob relocated to Los Angeles, CA with his in-laws Randolph and Elise Tye, to find a job so he could move his family to L.A. The family later joined him in 1963. Three years after, Bob and Carrie made the decision to adopt a daughter, and on December 1, 1966 Dawn Doughrity (Lombard) was adopted and placed in their home when she was 1 year old. He was an active volunteer at his children’s elementary school, helping to plan fundraisers and overseeing the bookkeeping from the annual carnivals to the weekend bingo for St. Francis Cabrini, in Los Angles.
Bob loved his family dearly! He never wanted them to go without anything they needed or wanted. He always responded to their direct comments of “I love you” with “I love you more”. He also loved his extended family and friends and made sure no matter what was going on in his life to stay in touch. He was readily available to assist anyway he could, financially, physically, and emotionally. He grew up with parents who were ministers, and accepted Christ at a young age. He rededicated his life to the Lord in his middle age years and again in his latter years. He would tell anyone he talked to, “The Good Lord has truly blessed me. I’ve lived a good life”.
There were many other things he loved in life. He loved to eat, he was a foodie and looked forward to trying new restaurants with his family and friends. He loved listening to Jazz and attending jazz events small and large, local and afar. He loved traveling and cruising and he loved attending the Pruitt and the Martin family reunions. He learned to love going to the YMCA at 6 am with Carrie to exercise and see his friends as they encouraged him to keep exercising and change his diet. He loved attending Claude Pepper Senior Center every Friday to play poker with his friends and attend senior bus trip events.
