Ruth entered this world on March 22, 1924 to Jesse and Zella Kohrt. She was born on the family farm East of Rock Rapids, Iowa., where she had two older brothers, Robert, who proudly served in the United States Air Force, and Forrest, who also served in the military with the United States Navy.
Ruth learned at an early age the importance of family, faith, and hard work growing up and living on the family farm.
She attended school, Kindergarten all the way up to the 12th grade at the same school with the same teacher all through out. Upon graduating from the 12th grade, she was accepted to Iowa State University where she graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Ruth began what was to be a long and successful journey as an educator all through her entire career.
One year later on June 25, 1948, she married her school sweetheart Robert (Bob) Blevins, who later became an educator and teacher as well. On a lighter note, Ruth used to help Bob with his homework constantly just to help him pass, since she was always the smart one.
Ruth and Bob moved from Iowa, relocating out here to Los Angeles in 1952. Once here in Los Angeles, Ruth continued furthering her education by attending UCLA where she received her Master’s Degree. Ruth and Bob spent the next 20 years in Los Angeles before settling into their Torrance home so many of you have been to.
In May of 1963, Ruth and Bob were blessed with their only daughter Terri. While raising Terri, Ruth continued her teaching career, teaching at many Los Angeles Unified schools such as, Washington High School, Bret Harte, Narbonne, and Gardena High School. She even became the Dean of Girls at Gardena High School before retiring in 1979.
God and Faith were always so important to Ruth. She became very active with St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Redondo Beach. She was very active in the church helping with so many projects like Project Needs, Heartline, and became the treasurer of the church for many years, as well as playing in the bell choir, quilt club, book club, and church retreats where she created and cemented the relationships with many of the members who have become lifelong friends.
Ruth LOVED playing cards. In the early years, Ruth and Bob would have Friday night poker nights with their neighbors for many years. Later, Ruth started a monthly neighborhood Bingo club, and that same group played together for over 30 years. Ruth used to participate weekly over at the Senior Club at Perry Park. One of her favorite card games was Hand and Foot, which not only did she enjoy playing at the Senior Club, but spent many Friday and Saturday nights schooling her family at home.
Sadly, Ruth lost her beloved husband Bob to cancer in 1984.
Ruth was the epitome of family first. No matter what came up, good or bad, Ruth would open her heart and her home to help someone out.
Ruth is survived by her Daughter Terri and her husband Dana, Grandson Tim and his lovely wife Mari, along with their children Luke and brand new baby Olivia, as well as many nieces and nephews though out California, and the Midwest.
