
Shirley was born in Waterbury Connecticut April 24, 1937 and died the morning of March 21, 2010 in Little Company of Mary Hospital ICU after an intense battle with a lung disease. She had been suffering for many years the pain in all her joints from calcium deposits in the membrane separating the bones at each joint. During this time she fought the pain and did "not go gentle into that good night" as urged by Dylan Thomas.
She spent her life learning , teaching and caring for her family and others. She received her nursing Degree Summa from Yale New Haven School of Nursing, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston University, Summa cum laude, Master of Arts Sociology from The University of Arizona, Master of Arts & Master of Philosophy from Yale University. During these years she also taught undergraduate classes in nursing, hospital administration, public health at Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Dominguez Hills and El Camino College. For 5 years before joining The Aerospace Corporation she conducted some 150 seminars throughout the country in Nursing Administration, Management and Stress Reduction. After joining the Aerospace Corp. for 10 years she performed the duties of an industrial nurse in the protection of their workers. She has also written numerous papers, published and unpublished on Stress Management and management problems. She is survived by her son, Eric Gruber and her husband, Earl F. Gruber.
A memorial service will be held the afternoon of April 8, 2010 at White and Day Mortuary 3215 Sepulveda Blvd, Manhattan Beach CA. at 2:00 P.M.
A reception will follow in White & Day's Lighthouse Reception Room from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M.
