Photo of Bill, Paul, and Alan at our 60th MIT reunion in 2017.
Bill was Paul's wonderfully supportive Best Man at Paul's wedding to Karin Hansen at the MIT chapel in 1960. Over the years, I (Paul) enjoyed visiting Bill and his growing family in Manhattan Beach.

After my wife Karin died in 1986, I took my three youngest daughters, Emily, Lilo, and Sylvia, on one of my trips to LA. Bill's sons and my daughters had great fun surfing on nearby Manhattan Beach.

Bill and I both loved the music of Johann S. Bach. At our 60th MIT reunions, he gave me CDs with some of his favorite Bach recordings. I also drove him to the Van Huene workshop in Brookline, near Boston, to see how they made their famous recorders. They are so much a part of the early music that Bill and I loved.

Bill was always friendly, kind, understanding, and possessing a good balance between idealism and reality. After all, he could not have become Chief Engineer at his company without having a firm grasp of the world as it is. He would explain how he would solve problems that younger engineers could not. He was so proud that one of his sons was playing this same role at his former company.

Bill now “knows as he has been known ( I Corinthians 13).”

In dying we are born to eternal life. (St Francis of Assisi)

The power of love is greater than death (Paul Tillich)

With thanks for knowing Bill, who was the brother I wanted but never had. (I did have a younger sister).
Paul H. Carr, his MIT classmate.
