Willie Albert Lloyd, affectionately known as Willie Albert or simply “AL”, was born in Meridian, Mississippi on March 23rd, 1954. He was born to his mother, Alberta Lloyd and father Willie Floyd Hopson, the first child of both. He matriculated through Los Angeles area schools where he made lifelong friends from elementary through his graduation from Manual Arts Senior High School in 1972.
Willie studied accounting at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and used his knowledge to invest in real estate and launch multiple business ventures. While he enjoyed entrepreneurship, he knew his true calling was greater. Willie made the brave decision to dedicate his life to service by completing his Advanced Officer Training at Rio Hondo College in 1993.
Willie would go on to spend the rest of his career in law enforcement including multiple specialty roles such as serving with the K-9 unit alongside his trusted German Shepard, Aron and patrolling with the LASD Mounted Enforcement Detail upon his loyal Quarter Horse, The Colonel, who was with him to the very end. Throughout his 30+ year career, he earned several Officer Commendations and letters from civilians highlighting his dedication to going above and beyond the call of duty and consistently saving lives both literally and figuratively. He served proudly until he retired with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in 2021.
Willie LOVED family. He was not just a proud father; he was particularly proud to be the father of his son, Elliott, which made him an even prouder grandfather. He also served as a father figure and mentor in many capacities to loved ones of all ages with his whole heart. He loved photos and capturing unforgettable moments, which he’d display all over his home. He loved baseball so much he even spent much of his adulthood playing for various organized teams. His hobbies included being a self proclaimed cowboy, watching country westerns, listening to a great tune, belly laughing at a comedy show, checking in on his loved ones, and enjoying a fine glass of cognac.
Willie was a steady presence, a first-call kind of man, a generous, fearless, caring soul with an unforgettable smile and laugh. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alberta Lloyd and Willie Floyd Hopson, and his brothers Gregory Lloyd and Ronald “Torrez” Hopson and his grandmother Nola Bell Clayton. He leaves to cherish his memory his only child, Elliott (Alyssa) Lloyd, his two grandchildren Londyn and Roman Lloyd, his siblings: Donal, Valerie “Sanchez”, Cedric, Terry “Chic”, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends who loved him dearly.
