Windell Jannatt Benny

A visitation for Windell will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lighthouse Memorials & Receptions, Rice Center, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503. The following day, the viewing start at 9:00 AM with the Funeral Service beginning at 10:00 AM. The Repast will occur Wednesday, July 16, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, also at Rice Center. The graveside service will occur Thursday, July 17, 2025 beginning at 12:45 PM at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Boulevard, Riverside, CA.

Windell Jannatt Benny was born on May 31, 1952, in Tallahassee, Florida, to Ophelia Fields. In 1964, he and his brother Charles moved to California, where they were lovingly raised by their grandmother Eula Mae Hill and aunt Marie McClendon.

A graduate of Washington Preparatory High School, Windell later attended Cal Poly Pomona before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1972, rising to the rank of Private First Class. Following his service, he dedicated 31 years to the Los Angeles Unified School District, retiring in 2011.

An adventurer at heart, Windell found joy in the outdoors—camping, biking, golfing, fishing, cooking and skiing. He was a founding member of the Snow Busters Ski Club, which joined the National Brotherhood of Skiers in 1988. He also ran his own travel business, Travelmakers, sharing his passion for exploration with others.

Windell was a proud father to three daughters—Erinne, Ariel, and Whitney. He encouraged their love of reading, athletics, and self-expression. His legacy continues through them and his granddaughter, June Amara.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Ophelia Fields; grandparents, Eula Mae and Charlie Hill; aunt Marie McClendon; and sister, Alexis Simms. He is survived by his daughters and granddaughter; brothers Charles (Barbara), James (Jane), Gerome, Lewis Jr.; sister Latecia (Frantz); and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Windell’s life was marked by service, joy, and unwavering love for family and adventure. He will be deeply missed.
