Ethel Barbara Poor

Ethel Bartz Poor was born Ethel Barbara Rowe July 11th 1931 on Rings Island Massachusetts to the late George and Florence (Garand) Rowe. Ethel graduated from Butterworth School of Nursing in 1952. During her psychiatric rotation at Traverse City State Hospital she met William Robert Bartz. Ethel and William married September 21st 1952. After working many years as a nurse, at Munson Medical Center, she returned to the classroom and in 1976 graduated with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Central Michigan University. Her passion was working with children and families. She was a 20 year participant in the Harvard Nurse’s Help Study. Ethel was a veracious reader. She weekly completed the New York Times crossword puzzle. She also excelled in Free Cell and Mahjong. She loved singing with The Traverse City Presbyterian Church choir. She was a member of the Soup Group, women who met monthly to eat soup and play Dominos. She could never drive by a garage sale without stopping! Oct 26th 2006, Ethel married Henry Poor. They met in Newburyport MA at a senior citizen group, the Third Alarmer’s. Ethel and Hank split their time between Michigan and Massachusetts. They both loved water, the ocean and Grand Traverse Bay. Ethel will be missed by her children Brenda Bartz, Bruce (Amy) Bartz and Brent Bartz; husband, Henry Poor; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren – all of Traverse City; and sister Susan Smith of NH. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jean Waterman, and her first husband William Bartz. Thank-you goes out to the staff of the Oncology Unit at Munson, Dr. David Gordon and staff, and the Munson Hospice House. Special acknowledgment for support from Rev Becky Chamberlin and the choir of the Presbyterian Church to Ethel and family. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Mar 8, 2012 at The Presbyterian Church with vistiation on Wednesday, Mar 7 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. I knew Ethel because she was a family friend. Ethel always seemed to be happy and she displayed a caring attitude. My wife, Sue, and Ethel belonged to a Child Study Club. The club shared many ideas and held social outings. Ethel was always important to our family. Dick Crampton
