

George was born in Onaway on March 16, 1933, to Marston and Drusella Portice, the second of five children. He married Rose Fisher on May 11, 1959, in Cheboygan County.
At age 18, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War, where he was awarded several commendations for his service, including two Purple Hearts.
After leaving the Army, George worked in the oil fields, as a welder and as a truck driver until his retirement.
George was a wonderful storyteller and had a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and loved making others laugh with his colorful stories. He also enjoyed woodworking and working with his hands.
George was a longtime member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
George is survived by his wife, Rose; son, Paul of Detroit; daughter, Linda (Dale) Pavwoski of Buckley; daughter, Charlene Laur of Detroit; sister, Darlene (Bob) Cox of Traverse City; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry; two sisters, Luella Middough and Betty Smith; and brother, Don.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 4, at the Covell Funeral Home, 232 E. State St., Traverse City. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. June 4, following visitation. Interment will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Munson Hospice in Traverse City.
