

Gloria Ivah Fern Moening, age 83, of Traverse City, Michigan and Tallahassee, Florida, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011. She was born November 11, 1927 in Lansing, Michigan to C. Russell and Lucille (Dicey) Gonser. Gloria married James P. Moening on March 17, 1948 in Lansing. Together they raised 3 children.
Gloria worked for over 20 years with the Lansing Police Department until her retirement. She was very talented in arts and crafts, including needle point, knitting, crocheting, painting, and many others. She received numerous awards for her talents, and was crowned 1997 Homemaker of the Year. During her retirement years, Gloria and Jim traveled the US, always finding a new adventure on the way to visit their children.
Gloria enjoyed Bingo and was an active member at the Traverse City Senior Center, VFW Posts 701 (Lansing), 2780 (Traverse City) and 3308 (Tallahassee). She also was a supporter of the local AML while Jim was alive.
She will be greatly missed by her 3 children: Ruth Coppler of Keokuk, Iowa; Ila (Vance) Burns of Tallahassee FL; and Steven (Lori) Moening of Portland, OR; 2 grandchildren: Jason Pollock of Houston, TX and David Waite of Denver, CO; 2 siblings: Bev (Les) Frank of Lansing, Flora Gilbert of Manistee; and a sister-in-law Peggy Gonser of Lansing.
Besides her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years; 2 brothers: Rusty and Kennard; and 2 sisters: Lois Masso and Judy Bice.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
Memorial contributions in Gloria’s name may be directed to the Traverse City Senior Center, Elder Day Stay and Services of Tallahassee, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
