Janice was an extraordinary woman who provided support, love, and encouragement to all she encountered. She was a social worker for Catholic Human Services with a strong commitment toward serving others and upholding the values of her profession. To her friends and family she was a great listener and confidant who always put others first; she was a giver not a taker and never expected anything in return.
Janice enjoyed gardening, reading, spending time with her friends, family and especially her grandchildren. She was very creative and enjoyed drawing, writing, and discussing the deeper meaning of life with the ones closest to her. Her love, laughter, non-judgmental advice, and quirky sense of humor will be missed by all.
She is survived by her 3 children: Kalysia “Kaly” Vasquez of Traverse City, Chad Whitman of Richmond KY, and Jody Whitman of Traverse City; 5 Grandchildren: Leah, Jarek, Mason, Gabriel, and Tyson; brother Richard (Sally) Sleder of WI and sister Marilyn (Thomas McPharlin) Sleder of Detroit; and her beloved cats.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Trnka) and Richard Sleder, and her husband Charles “Slim” Whitman.
A casual remembrance gathering and open house for family and friends will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at her home from 3-7 p.m.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society or the American Cancer Society. Please share your condolences at www.CovellFuneralHomes.com.
