Joan Catherine Bembeneck
August 20, 1932 – July 2, 2018
Joan Catherine (Harrigan) Bembeneck died July 2, 2018 at the age of 85. Joan grew up south of Traverse City, Michigan and loved the freedom of the farm life. She rode her horse to a one room school house most days.
She was lovingly raised by James and Rose (Ockert) Harrigan and being spoiled by her brothers and sisters. Her brothers were Ernest, John and Daniel. Her sisters were Ruth (Harrigan) Weaver, Dorothy (Harrigan) Houghton, Geneva Harrigan, Frances (Harrigan) Blonshine, and Mary Harrigan. She had many half-sisters; Rosetta (Houghton), Ruth (Houghton) Morgan, Nancy (Houghton) Frey, Susan (Houghton) Morgan, Margret (Houghton) Knight and a half-brother Michael Houghton.
She loved spending days with her sister of the heart Carol Ackles. They could sit for days and talk and talk when they got together. All you could do was sit back and listen.
Joan was married to Raymond Bembeneck on June 2, 1951. They were together until Raymond’s passing in 2007.
Together they raised 4 boys and 1 girl; Douglas, Catherine (Henkel), Thomas, Kenneth and Mathew. They also raised a niece, Rose (Maclain) Bolek. She had 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Joan was proceeded in death by her husband Ray, son Kenneth, niece Rose and 2 grandsons. Many of her brothers and sisters have also passed.
A Memorial Gathering is planned for September 22, 2018, from Noon – 6:00 p.m. at Cherry Bend Community Park. All friends and family are invited.
