Marie Irene Tompkins aged 96, passed away peacefully on her birthday, July 31st, 2017 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Marie was a long-time resident of Northern Michigan, including the last 35 years at Noble Pines in Elk Rapids, Michigan. Born in 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, Marie spent over 30 years serving both patients and staff as a dedicated employee of Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Marie was blessed with a large family including five surviving children; Frank (Carolyn) and Dick (Bobbie) of Wisconsin, Judy (Jim Standerfer) of Elk Rapids, Marge of Saginaw, and Pat (Brent Grouleu) of Rapid City. Marie has an amazing legacy of 16 Grandchildren, 37 Great-Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 1976 by her husband Franklin Tompkins after 36 years of marriage. Also preceding is her son, James Tompkins, her parents Chandler and Margaret (Topp) Bither, two Brothers Rodney and Chandler, sister; Jean (Kozlowski), and a granddaughter Angela Standerfer.
“Grandma T”, as she was known by many, enjoyed spending time with family the most. She particularly loved family picnics at the park. In her earlier days she enjoyed painting and ceramics. Marie was an avid reader. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and especially playing games. Grandma T was an expert Yahtzee player! Marie also enjoyed her many trips to Wisconsin visiting family and cheering on her Green Bay Packers. Grandma T never missed a loved one’s Birthday or an Anniversary. Getting a card from her was something to look forward to. Marie was dedicated and loving to everyone in her life. This special lady will truly be missed.
The family extended a special thank you to Margo for all her care and compansionship she gave to their mother.
Family and friends were invited to a celebration of life and visitation which was held at the Covell Funeral Home at 312 Pine St. Elk Rapids, MI 49629 on Sunday, August 6th from 11am to 1pm with services following at 1pm. Interment took place at 10am on Monday, August 7th at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse city, Michigan.
Memorial contributions were appreciated to Grand Traverse Commission on Aging. Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Home Elk Rapids.
