Sue was born on May 2, 1948 to John R. & Lillian E. LaGrant, in Detroit, MI. Sue graduated from Henry Ford High School in 1966 and attended Oakland University. Sue became mother to her two sons Jeff (1973) and Scott (1976). Sue moved to Elk Rapids, MI in 1982 and married the love of her life, Kenneth Dale Cook. Upon moving to Elk Rapids, Sue quickly became step-mom to 4 additional children, Deborah, Dawn, Paul, & Keith.
Sue began her life in Elk Rapids in earnest making new friends, engaging in her sons’ (Jeff & Scott) young lives as they transitioned from “downstate” to “up north.” One of Sue’s everlasting gifts was the effort and love she put into making sure that her blended family became one true family; she became the matriarch and fearless leader of our family. Sue cared deeply about everyone, always there to guide, champion and support her loved ones. This care did not end with her family as evidenced by the many friends Sue touched throughout her life.
Sue’s magic in her work world was her extraordinary organizing abilities, significantly supporting her business owners and making a difference in the lives of those with whom she met and worked. After several years working in the real estate industry, Sue worked tirelessly beside her husband, Ken, in their tool & die business, KB Cook Company. After the sale of their company, one would meet Sue in her various endeavors including working at the former Thru The Grapevine, contributing to her church as an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, also working at the former Act II, and most recently at Stuff N’ Such.
Sue was proceeded in death by her beloved son, Scott Cook; her parents Lillian & John LaGrant; her mother & father-in-law Kenneth and Ruth Cook.
Sue is survived by her husband Kenneth Dale Cook; her children Jeff (Katie) Cook, Deborah Brock, Dawn (Doug) O’Neal, Kenneth Paul Cook (Michelle), Keith (Renee) Cook; siblings John (Sandra) LaGrant, and Wendy (Megan) LaGrant; nieces Beth and Amy LaGrant. Sue is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and many best and dear friends from all over the country.
A candlelight vigil was held at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City on Friday, December 6th. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Sue’s birthday, May 2, 2020. Details will follow.
