Velma Irene Cook, 94, passed away Monday, March 19, 2018. She was born November 13, 1923 in Monroe Center, Michigan to Oliver and Helen (Thomas) Moyer. On April 12, 1952, Velma married Dwight (Bud) Cook in Traverse City, where they raised their family.
Velma retired from Milliken’s Department Store in January, 1989. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening and crocheting. Velma was a kind and generous soul. Over the years she made hundreds of hats and lap blankets that she donated to cancer centers and nursing homes.
Velma is survived by her daughters Debbie West, Jo (Jon) Powell, and Johnna (Terry) Broadway; grandchildren Jamie (Paul) Steffes, Jordan Stephens, Shainna (Cody) Webster, Lexy Powell, Kyle Broadway, Drew Broadway and Kara West; great-grandchildren Anakin and Korbyn Webster, and TyShaun West; and a sister, Ann McHuron.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; daughter Sue Stephens; son Donald Gaffney; brothers Orville Thomas and Lorin Moyer.
A memorial service at graveside is planned for the spring for immediate family.
