Bartholomew John Dekom (Bart) died Sunday, November 10, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. Bart was born to Anton and Marialys Dekom in Chicago Heights, IL. At the age of 13, the family moved to Manhasset, NY. He moved to Atlanta, GA where he met his wife, Janet; they married in 2001.
Bart was a proud veteran, serving in the United States Navy aboard the carrier USS Independence (CV62).
Being from Chicago, Bart became and stayed loyal to the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks traveling wherever the Cubs were playing. While in high school, Bart took to the stage in many musical productions. It stuck with him and he became active in the Theatre Ministry at Holy Cross Catholic Church. He performed in more than a dozen plays and also sang in the Church choir. He auditioned for the upcoming play the day before he died.
Bart oh so loved to fish. He enjoyed many summer vacations fishing on the pier at St. Simons Island. He and Janet would also go on deep sea fishing excursions.
Bart had a zest for life. He was known for his quick wit, strong opinions and kind demeanor. He loved his wife Janet, his country, his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Sutherland Dekom; his sister, Annie Dekom Akins; his brothers, Martin (Julie) Dekom; Fred Dekom; A.Kristian (JoAnn) Deckom and a passel of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday November 18, 2019 at Holy Cross Catholic Church starting at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 17 from 4 pm until 8 pm at Floral Hills Funeral Home.
