Dan Boda passed away on June 24, 2024 at the age of 92 in Decatur, Georgia.
He was the son of the late Rev. Andrew Boda and the late Mary Pakan.
He was predeceased by his brother John Boda, brother Samuel Boda and wife Lydia, his sister Ann Maack, and his sister Ruth Martin and husband Ron.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor; by his son Alan Boda (Karen) and daughter Elaine Boda (Mike Adams); and by his grandchildren Brian Boda (Lattie Reddoch), Katherine Warren (Alex), Allison Seman (Walker), and Erika Adams; and by his brother-in-law Roy Maack.
Dan was professor of music at Furman University in Greenville, SC for 27 years where he retired as professor emeritus. Countless students took his courses in music theory, conducting, and violin. He was conductor of the Furman University Orchestra and was a violinist in the Greenville Symphony and other regional orchestras. He was co-director of the Furman University Music Camp and was on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, NC during the summers. After retirement, he and his wife Ellie were fixtures in the Furman library and around campus.
Dan and Ellie have been long-time members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, SC. He was an avid golfer and greatly enjoyed his time on the course with his various golf buddies. In retirement, he and Ellie loved to travel internationally.
He received his Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University, his Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, and his PhD from Florida State University. He served in the U.S. Army where he played in the generals’ quartet. Prior to Furman, he taught and conducted at Austin College in Sherman, TX, and at Western State College in Gunnison, CO.
Dan imparted a deep appreciation for the subtleties and beauty of classical music to those who took his classes or played under his baton. Many of his students from Furman and Brevard have gone on to illustrious music careers of their own.
