She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward H Hodge, and sons, Gary Allen Hodge and Randy Ryan Hodge.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Terry Daniels of Stone Mountain, Georgia. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Doris was born in the small town of Estill Springs in the beautiful Cumberland valley of Tennessee to Edwin and Lyda Arnold. The youngest of nine children she treasured her memories of living in a small town, and being reared in a large, loving family.
In 1945 she graduated from high school and opted to marry her high school sweetheart, (who was in the service) rather than going on to college. Her education was continued, however, because she was an avid reader. History and literature were her passion. She memorized easily, and learned poetry, songs, and portions of many of the classics which she loved.
Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends knew that she always had a song or poem to share when the occasion called for it. Of course, every visit ended with her classic farewell, “see you later alligator, after while crocodile”.
She enjoyed taking an active role in her children’s activities, such as Little League, the Cub Scouts and the Girl Scouts. She always held an office in the PTA and volunteered and assisted in her children’s church activities. It was her hope and desire to make a meaningful contribution and to encourage others.
She was interested in political issues and kept abreast of what was going on in our country. She was very patriotic, loving and embracing the values our nation was founded upon.
She was a student of the scriptures from an early age and enjoyed sharing her love of the Word with her family. In later years, she taught Bible studies for young women.
In her journey through life, her Savior sustained, strengthened, and comforted her through every trail, heartache, and obstacle she faced. The Holy Spirit gave her peace beyond measure, and joy unspeakable and full of glory! It was her deep longing for her family and friends that they too would come to know her Savior and this same peace through the Holy Spirit.
