Florence Frimpong, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, aunt, sister and friend died peacefully at age 64 at home surrounded by her family, following a heroic battle with endometrial cancer. She is preceded in death by her parents, father Opanin Kofi Amankwaa and mother Afua Benewaa, her sister Philomena Amankwaa, her brother Joseph Marfo and her granddaughter Renee Koduah-Sarpong. She is survived by her husband Joe, her sons Kwasi Koduah-Sarpong and Rick Frimpong (Dana), her daughters Nanna and Audra (Martin Curry); her grandchildren Kingston Dareus and Denzil Koduah-Sarpong; her sister Mercy Boama, her brother Kwame Frimpong; her nieces Angelina Pinamang, Evelyn Bempomaa Frimpong, Juliet Tiwaa Frimpong and all extended family and friends who loved her dearly.
Florence was known for her beautiful smile, her sense of humor, her devotion for her husband, children and grandchildren and her love for Alabama Football (Roll Tide!). She was born on July 21,1956 in Kumasi, Ghana. She courageously moved to the United States, joining her husband Joe in Rolla, MO in 1982, where Joe completed his PhD in Engineering and Florence completed her Bachelor’s degree in 1988. Together they built a legacy of family, friends and accomplishments, moving from Rolla to Detroit, MI before settling in Canfield, OH.
Florence was a deeply involved mother, caring for her children and managing the many activities of an active family, always focusing on school and education. As her kids grew up, she remained passionate and invested in their lives and many achievements, always supporting them with her joyful presence and careful concern. In the early 2000s, she took time to focus on her own continuing education and received a master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies, however, she remained steadfast in her commitment to her family and decided against pursuing a full-time career. She continued her devotion as her family grew, spending her final years as an active and present grandmother.
Florence and Joe were married for 39 years and were more than just husband and wife-they were everything to each other. They remained focused and committed to one another as they navigated the obstacles of building their life in a new country, balancing careers and raising a family; always doing so with resilience, partnership and a sense of humor. Joe never left Florence’s side as her illness progressed and showed his unwavering devotion to her until the very end.
Florence made people feel warm and welcomed wherever she went. She always remembered small details about people’s lives and showed genuine interest and appreciation for everyone she met. She was hilarious, magnetic, caring and never passed up an opportunity to have her photo taken. Her unwavering support for her family knew no limits, whether it was donating her time and energy to help with miniscule tasks or remaining by the side of family members for weeks in the hospital when they fell to illness. Florence had so much to be proud of as she lived a full and productive life, but most of all she was proud to be a wife, mother and grandmother and her family is grateful for her lifetime of devotion.
Due to the pandemic and COVID-19 precautions, Florence will be interred at a private ceremony surrounded by immediate family only at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta, GA on Friday, October 30, 2020 at 11am EST. All who would like to attend the service virtually can do so via the link:
