Fred was preceded in death by his parents Walter F. Augustine and Paranka Shaynoah Augustine, his wife Mary Kathleen Martin Augustine, and all of his siblings: Ann DeBaylo Galiano of NJ, Julian DeBaylo of TX, and Walter Don Augustine of NC. Fred was a native of Burgaw, NC, graduated from Burgaw High School in 1954, and served honorably in the Navy from 1954 to 1962. Upon his discharge, his close friend from the navy, Jerry Farmakis, encouraged him to move to Atlanta, where he quickly gained a wonderful adopted family and was introduced to the city’s Greek community. Fred considered Mary Algers Farmakis as his “adopted” mother and lovingly referred to her as “Mommie Farmakis” for over 50 years.
Fred worked at First National Bank of Atlanta, where he met his future wife, Kathleen Martin. He later moved into a career in insurance and opened his own independent insurance agency – Fred Augustine Insurance Agency, Inc., which he operated in the Northlake area of Atlanta for approximately 30 years.
Fred is survived by his son, James Michael “Mike” Augustine, daughter-in-law Sharon Murphy Augustine, and much beloved granddaughter, Kathleen May Augustine of Milledgeville, GA. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Augustine of Elizabethtown, NC and Clara DeBaylo of Seabrook, TX, as well as a nephew, Walter Lee "Wally" Augustine of NC, and two nieces, Marianne Galiano Browe and Jamie Galiano, both of NJ.
Fred was an avid lottery player and seemed to have good success with it. He rationalized that since this hobby supported education, it therefore provided job security for his son. He was the eternal optimist and just knew the next big winning ticket was around the corner. He loved going on trips to Cherokee, North Carolina with his friends ... not for gambling, but rather for “gaming.” Fred was also a huge NASCAR fan – always rooting for the Ford.
Fred definitely had his own sense of style. No matter the time of year, he was most often clad in Bermuda shorts, tube socks and his infamous elastic knee brace. But the most impressive thing he always wore was a big smile. He was always ready with positive comments to brighten anyone’s day.
Fred was constantly taking care of people...always helping and supporting neighbors and friends. Bringing them food, doing yard work, serving as their "car lawyer" (helping them negotiate a new car purchase), etc. After he closed his business and retired, he developed a routine of visiting his network of friends around the Northlake area – he dubbed these businesses and convenience stores as his "offices." Fred was very steadfast in his faith and found a meaningful place to serve through the usher ministry at Holy Cross. The ushers were a supportive group of friends and his church family meant so much to him.
