With heavy hearts we share the passing of Gwendolyn Floyd Nelson on June 18, 2025. She was born on July 25, 1930, to Roselle Cox Floyd and George Newton Floyd of Atlanta.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Conner Nelson, Jr. and son, Tom Nelson.
She is survived by her son, Barry Nelson, daughter-in-law, Becky Nelson, granddaughter, Rebecca Fisher (Bryan), grandson, Ben Nelson, and great granddaughters, Joanna Nelson, Mellie Fisher, and great grandson, Jackson Fisher.
Gwen graduated from Bass High school in Atlanta. After graduation she worked for Courts and Co. for 3 years.
She Married Conner F. Nelson, Jr., “The love of her life” on October 6, 1950, and celebrated 70 years of life together. As natives of Atlanta, they had many circles of friends of which one group called themselves the “Bridge Club”. They never played bridge but enjoyed decades of travel and fun together.
Gwen enjoyed tennis for several years and enjoyed clogging with Connor with a group for a while. She was an excellent cook and found great joy in preparing special dishes for each family member on special occasions.
Gwen greatly enjoyed spending time with Connor at their family condo at the King and Prince Beach Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia. While Connor golfed, she would spend time antiquing as she had an eye for decorating and design.
Without a doubt, Gwen’s greatest joy was her family-as wife to Connor, mother to Tommy and Barry, as GG to her grandchildren, Rebecca and Ben, and great granddaughter, Joanna. GG as we came to call her was a beautiful woman and was remarkably selfless as Matriarch to the Nelson family.
She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers , the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice in her memory. There will be a private graveside service.
