James "Jim" Norman went to be with the Lord on February 4, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on August 17, 1933, he was the eldest of five sons to parents Mary and Joseph Norman.
Jim graduated from Iowa State University in 1955 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at Iowa State, he was an active member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and it was there that he met the love of his life, Diana Alcock. They were married in 1956 and shared a wonderful 62 years together until her passing in 2018.
After college, Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy. By the time of his release from active duty in 1958, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and went on to serve in the Naval Reserves for 23 years.
Professionally, Jim was a mechanical engineer at Lennox Heating & Air Conditioning for the majority of his career. Even after retiring from Lennox, he continued to share his expertise as Manager of Technical Services at ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).
Jim was dedicated to giving back to the community through his volunteer work with the Rotary Club. His passion for cycling was well-known, as he was an active member and leader in the Southern Bicycle League for many years. Jim embarked on numerous multi-day rides with his closest cycling friends, including a memorable journey from the west coast to the east coast and an adventure from British Columbia to Mexico.
Jim's legacy lives on through his two daughters, Nancy Burnett and Linda James (and her husband Joe); four grandchildren, Allen Burnett, Elaine Burnett, Eric James and Jadyn James; eight great-grandchildren, and his brothers John Norman, Joe Norman, and Paul Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Leroy Norman and Mary Elizabeth Proctor, as well as his brother, David Norman.
Jim Norman's life was marked by his dedication to family, service, and his numerous passions. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 1st at 11 a.m. in the main sanctuary of Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, where Jim and Diana were faithful members for over 50 years.
