Janice obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1958 and went on to earn a Masters in Library Science from Case Western University. There, Janice began her career as a Reference Librarian at the newly established Monroe Community College in 1961. She remained at the college until her retirement in 1997. During her working years she was in fact a trailblazer, being the primary wage earner for the family. A rare occurrence in the 1960s & 1970s.
Janice sang with the Finger Lakes Chorale, participated in local theatre productions and was a choir member of the First Congregational Church of East Bloomfield. Janice retired to the community of Waldoboro, ME where she continued her joy of singing with the Sheepscot Valley Chorus and the Coastal Chorale. She also joined the Broad Bay Congregational Church of Christ where she enjoyed fellowship and friendship with many members. Janice is predeceased by her parents, James O'Brien, Sr. and Katherine O'Brien (nee Bursaw), and sister-in-law Carolyn O'Brien (nee Copeland).
She is survived by her son Christopher and his wife Judy, son Bradford and his wife Karen, daughter Katherine and her husband Robert, and daughter Mary, along with her brother James O'Brien, Jr. She is survived by eight grandchildren, two grandchildren-in-laws, and one great-grandchild born in the summer before her passing, to her great joy. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews, all of whom gave her much happiness.
A lover of books, language, music, and murder mysteries, she will be missed by a great many but beloved and cherished by all.
