
Dr. Jean B. Howell, 94, of Dunwoody, died March 27, 2013. Jean was born in Lyons, Georgia in 1918 to John and Lillian Howell. After the untimely death of his father, Jean lived at the Georgia Baptist Children's Home until 1936.
During World War II, Jean served in the U.S. Army Air Force in India and China. After the war, Jean returned to a business career in Atlanta and married the late Theda Hamilton in 1946. Jean graduated from Mercer University in Macon and earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Religious Education degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jean served in education and music ministries for several Baptist churches in Florida, Kentucky and Georgia. He later began his teaching career as an Associate Professor at Mercer University Atlanta. He retired as Assistant Dean in 1984. Jean also served as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Children's Home.
Jean is survived by his son, Douglas Hamilton Howell (Rose) of Louisville, Kentucky and his daughter, Bonnie Howell Mitchell (Wade) of Dunwoody, Georgia, his grandchildren Charles and Michael Howell, Gray Mitchell and Whitney Arellano, four great-grandchildren and his sweetheart, Joyce King.
The funeral will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 1:30 PM at St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church with The Reverend Dr. John F. McCard officiating. A visitation with family and friends will immediately precede the service at 12:30 PM in Gable Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, PO Box 329, Palmetto, Georgia 30268. The burial will be held later in a private service.
