Jo Lorraine Scott Hubbard -Legacy of Life and Love
Her Beginning
Mrs. Jo Lorraine Scott Hubbard formerly of Suffolk, Virginia said farewell to a blessed and loving earthly life and exchanged her Decatur, GA keys for her Heavenly home on May 4, 2021 at 7:40 am which would be her devotion hour. Her love for life did not come to an end with her earthly death; her loving heart left a beacon of light for her family and all who knew her.
She was born on October 17, 1945 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital to the late Joseph Hyman Scott who died in the military prior to her birth and to the late Ernell Vann Scott. Lorraine was born 7 months after her daddy Joseph (Joe) was killed in the Navy in Key West, Florida. Her first name, Jo, is the female spelling of her dad’s, Joseph, name. She was named Lorraine because one of her dad’s favorite songs was “Sweet Lorraine”. Several years later Ernell married the late Leon Davis, the only earthly father Lorraine knew.
Her Walk with God
Raised in a home that honored and glorified God, she was baptized at the age of 12 at East End Baptist Church Suffolk, VA. There she participated in the youth choir, BYF, Sunday School and Youth Day programs. Lorraine continued her faith walk by joining a local church when she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. When she relocated to Decatur, GA she joined Green Forest Community Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School during Fulfillment Hour and participated in Bible Study and the Prayer Group.
She also attended Black Church for many years in Ashville, NC where she reunited with many of her Christian friends from all over the country including those from East End Baptist Church. Every morning, she would read her daily devotionals, a lesson she learned from her Momma and would often collaborate with her big sister Sandra. During all her health challenges, she never forgot to whom she belonged, and she continued to have faith in God, knowing soon He would receive her in glory.
Her Life’s Work
Jo Lorraine graduated in 1963 from Booker T. Washington High School, Suffolk, VA. She continued her education at Hampton Institute (University) where she earned a B.S. Degree in Dietary Science. Her studies at Hampton led to an internship in Salt Lake City, Utah. She later moved to Decatur GA, where she received a master’s degree and worked as a Nutritionist at Emory Hospital Atlanta for several decades. She was also very proud of the work she did as a Certified Diabetes Educator and even after retirement she continued to serve as a nutritional advisor.
Her Finding Love
While living in Salt Lake City, Jo Lorraine met the love of her life, Thomas (Tom) Howard Hubbard, Jr. Two children were born to this marriage, Thomas Howard Hubbard, III and Dr. Holly Lorraine-Ernell Hubbard. On April 1, 2021, after 52 years of marriage, Tom took his wings leaving his sweet Jo.
