
John Marion Harmon, Sr. passed away August 29 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Pritchett Harmon, in 1999. John was born May 3, 1917, in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Swainsboro, Georgia. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India theatre as an aviator where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, among other commendations. Following the war, John continued to serve in the Georgia National Guard until his retirement in 1970 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
John had a long career in management at Atlantic Steel Company, and after retiring worked for the DeKalb County Tax Commissioner. He was a proud member of the Gate City Guard, Northlake Elks Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars-Stone Mountain Lodge, as well as other military and charitable organizations. John was a long time member of Martha Brown United Methodist Church. He is survived by his sons, John (Dale), Jeff (Jayne), and Jim; his grandchildren, Amy Harmon (Henry Diller) and Jay Harmon (Shannon); and his great-grandchildren, Patrick and Audrey Harmon. John’s charm, kindness, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. We love you Paw Paw.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 3000 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA, where a graveside service will begin at 11 a.m.
