April 6, 1932 – December 30, 2025
Joyce Elizabeth Myers, 92, of Smoke Rise, Georgia, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, after a long and fulfilling life filled with faith, love, family, and service.
She was born on April 6, 1932, in Savannah, GA, to Haywood and Julia “Betty” Myers. As a child, her family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she spent her adolescent years. Later in life, she attended college at Emory University where she pursued her passion for nursing. While at Emory, she earned her degrees and also met her husband, Richard B. Stewart.
Together, they embraced a life working as a nurse and a doctor. Later, they served as Presbyterian missionaries, dedicating their time to communities in Costa Rica and Ecuador. While serving they welcomed their two sons, Steven and David. Upon returning to the United States, Joyce and Richard continued their roles in the medical field and raised their boys together.
After 20 years, her marriage unfortunately came to an end. Afterwards, she moved back to Florida, where she transitioned to nursing education becoming a professor. During this time she inspired countless students with her dedication and knowledge of the field.
In 1991, Joyce returned to Georgia to be near her family and began a cherished chapter as a grandmother. Known lovingly as "Nana," she spent a great deal of intentional time with her two grandchildren, Christopher and Jenna. She truly nurtured their lives with her boundless love and wisdom.
Joyce's unwavering faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her through every challenge and triumph. She often expressed gratitude for the blessings she received and lived by the Golden Rule, touching the lives of all who knew her with her kindness and generosity.
She is survived by her sons, Steven M. Stewart and his wife, LeeAnn, and David R. Stewart and his wife, Akrivy; her granddaughter, Jenna Pelletier, and her husband, Daniel; and her great-granddaughter, Julia. She is reunited in Heaven with her beloved parents, Haywood and Julia ”Betty” Myers, and precious grandson, Christopher D. Stewart.
Joyce will be remembered for her steadfast faith, devotion to her family, and the compassion she extended to everyone she met. Joyce’s loving presence will be deeply missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3150 Lawrenceville Hwy, Tucker, GA 30084. Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the service.
Rest in peace, Mom and Nana. You will remain in our hearts forever.
