Luther H Vinson

Luther Herman Vinson of Tucker, Georgia passed away on Monday the 13th of July at the age of 98. He was born on November 16, 1927, in Harlem, New York where he resided with his biological mother until age 7 when he was placed in a loving foster home in New Rochelle, NY. He remained there until graduating from Albert Leonard High School and thereafter enlisting in the Navy in 1946 for two years, proudly serving as a seaman on the U.S.S. Missouri battleship from 1946 to 1948. He returned from the Navy to attend New York University where he completed two years of college, later finishing and earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle and ultimately obtaining Master of Business Administration from Pace University in NYC. At the same time, he was working to support his wife Blancha and three children, Eric, David and Adrienne residing and thriving in New Rochelle and the greater community. He was a strong believer in education as a tool for freedom and independence while encouraging his children and mentoring numerous young people throughout his impactful life to take that path to be the best that they could be.

Luther accepted the position in 1949 as Program Director of the Remington Boys Club where he worked and created programs which resulted in him being recognized and honored as one of the Remington Boys Club, Mens Club co-founders. As his family started to grow with the birth of his first son Eric in 1951, Luther sought opportunities in sales to be a greater financial provider first in the Insurance industry with Mutual of Omaha achieving stature as their number one salesman in the nation out of their training program. He went on to sell mutual funds for Dreyfus and later joined Freedom National Bank at his Harlem birthplace in 1968 where he raised millions in deposits, becoming assistant to the president and gaining recognition by its chairman, baseball great Jackie Robinson. After demonstrating his fund-raising skills, he was recruited as an executive to do just that by Vernon Jordan who was running the United Negro College Fund at that time. After a successful fundraising experience there, he went full circle back into the insurance business earning his CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) certification and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) license while leading a training program of new agents at The Equitable Life Insurance Company of New York in 1977 from which he retired in 1988.

Luther was actively involved in church choir activities, golf and supporting his children in their various school sports and music endeavors where they excelled.

Luther is preceded in death by his Parents: Hattie Vinson (Johnson), Lillian Dickerson (Burleigh). Siblings: Harvey Johnson, Jane Johnson, Miriam Johnson, Virginia Cowart (Bill) Lillian Fitzgerald (David) Ceasar Dickerson. Children: David Vinson “Numa”.

He is survived by his wife Blancha Mae Vinson, his son Eric Vinson (Rhetta) and daughter Adrienne Forstall (Kweku). Grandchildren: Noelle Vinson St Jean (Terry), Adam Douglass Vinson, Ryan David Vinson, Kaya Forstall Walter (Keith), Ayaan Forstall Jones (Mckinley), Cailey Forstall Rash (Caleb) Great Grandchildren: Nora Rash and Jane Rash.

The Home Going Memorial Service for Luther Vinson will be held July 31st, 2026, at St. Catherine's AMEZ Church
