

Raymond Bernard Stein, Jr, 93, died November 15 2014 peacefully at Fountainview Center in Atlanta Georgia. He was born in Erie Pennsylvania on June 22, 1921 and was the son of Raymond B. Stein, Sr. and Johanna Brandschott Stein. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alice Ford Stein.
Ray grew up in Erie, PA and studied chemical engineering at Penn State University. His studies were interrupted by World War II when he joined the army. He served at Oak Ridge Tennessee where he worked on the Manhattan Project. After the war, he continued his studies at Penn State where he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity and graduated in 1947. He met his “Model T”, Alice Bradley Ford, in Oak Ridge and they were married March 6 1946 in Deland Florida.
Ray and his family lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois before settling in Atlanta in 1961. He worked in sales in the paint and paper industry where he made many life-long friends. After his retirement, he enjoyed working at Georgia Tech and working out at with Emory University Health Enhancement Program.
Ray was a longtime member of Briarcliff Baptist Church and a member of Corbett Hayden’s Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Master’s Lodge # 295 and was a clown with the Shriners. He was actively involved with his lodge and served as a chaplain. He and Alice enjoyed many years as square dancers with the White Owls square dance club and was a member of the World War II Round Table. He had many hobbies and traveled with his family to every state in the union, except Hawaii.
In addition to his wife Alice, Ray is survived by 2 sons, Ronald B. and Cindy Stein of Decatur, GA and Brent A. and Carolyn Stein of Meansville, GA. He was predeceased by his son Gary F. Stein, MD. He is also survived by 1 granddaughter, Donna A. Brat and her fiance’ Ken Perkins of Atlanta, GA and 2 grandsons, Nicholas B. Stein and Anne Taylor of Washington, DC and Zachary H. Stein and his fiancée Whitney Bossie of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by Cristal (Dandi) and Brandon Johnson of Griffin, GA and Nicole and Kevin Cope of Gahanna, OH, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday, November 22 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Floral Hills Funeral Home with Rev. John Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
