Roberta Louise Comperry Schmidt, a former resident of Hopkinsville, KY, and a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the age of 99 in Tucker, GA.
Born on March 13, 1926, in Clarksville, TN, she was the daughter of Robert Comperry and Josephine Burke Comperry.
Roberta was first married to James W. "JW" Witty, who preceded her in death on November 2, 1951. She later married Lt Col US Army Dr. Robert Schmidt, with whom she shared over 40 years of marriage. They resided in Indiana until his death, after which she returned to Hopkinsville to be near her niece, Glynn Ward and her husband Art, with whom she shared dinner with nightly. Roberta worked at Buck's Ladies Shop on Main Street and was a devoted member of Hopkinsville First United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the community, participating in the annual Hopkinsville Rotary Auction by serving in the Sweet Shop and baking for the sale.
In her later years, Roberta moved to Georgia to live with her daughter Becky. There, she attended Tucker First United Methodist Church, taking part in Bible studies, ladies retreats, and community outreach. During the pandemic, she spent hours wrapping rolls of toilet paper for a local food pantry and folding plastic grocery bags for mats for the unsheltered. She went monthly to support the recovery program at Trinity Community Ministries in Atlanta, where she shared meals and hugs with the men in recovery, earning the affectionate title of "Mama." She also spent many joyful days at senior daycare centers Plymouth Harbor and Peachtree Christian Health, where her lovely disposition charmed staff and attendees alike, earning her a special place in their hearts.
Roberta had a zest for life and loved to travel until her health forced her to stop. Together, she and Becky traveled to England, France, Greece, Italy, Alaska, and many breathtaking national parks across the Southwest, as well as numerous cruises and local excursions. She often said that Becky never let her take her shoes off because they were always on the go!
Known to her loved ones as "Granny", Roberta had a unique ability to make everyone feel special. She always put others before herself, asking how she could help even when her strength waned. She loved her family fiercely, always considering Becky her "little girl", and she shared a special bond with her son-in-law Adolfo. She cherished their family gatherings, expressing how wonderful it was to have everyone together, and loved singing her favorite hymn, "When We All Get to Heaven."
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James W. "JW" Witty; and her second husband, Lt Col US Army Dr. Robert Schmidt.
Roberta is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Becky Burnett and Adolfo Perez Palma of Tucker, GA; her grandchildren, Amy Smith (Tim), George Burnett, Jr. (Brooke), and Jeff Burnett (Brittany) and great-grandchildren, Corrie Lehman (Carl), Luke Burnett (Katie), Avery Burnett, Hiatt Burnett, and Sutton Burnett; and her beloved niece, Glynn Ward.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, 138 Main Street in Cadiz, KY, where the family will receive friends on Sunday, September 21, 2025, from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Graveside service will follow at 11:30 AM at East End Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her first husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Roberta's name to Trinity Community Ministries, 21 Leonard Tate Street, Atlanta, GA 30303.
