Brian moved with his family to Tucson when he was three years old and made Tucson his home for the rest of his life, apart from a brief period in Seattle, Washington, where he managed an engineering group at Amazon.
Brian graduated from Sahuaro High School in Tucson and went on to attend the University of Arizona, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics. He later earned a Master of Science degree in Management and Information Systems.
Brian spent most of his professional career with Assessment Technology Incorporated, where he was a key developer of an assessment platform designed to help educators monitor students' mastery of academic standards. His technical ability was matched by his ability to work with people. Brian was very much a "people person," and those who worked with him valued not only his knowledge and leadership but also his willingness to listen, encourage, and help others succeed. He took particular pride in mentoring the people he managed.
Nothing was more important to Brian than his children. He loved being involved in their lives and took joy in their accomplishments. He was a devoted father, a loyal friend, and someone who formed lasting relationships with the people around him.
Brian faced his battle with a brain tumor with remarkable courage. Even through difficult circumstances he maintained his cheerful attitude and his interest in the people around him. The caregivers who assisted him during his illness became universally fond of him, a reflection of the warmth and good nature that characterized Brian throughout his life.
Brian was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Benson, and his brother, Steven Benson. He is survived by his son, Steven, his daughters, Sophia Crawley and Sydney, his granddaughter, Alexandria Hoyos, his father, Clark Benson, his sister, Christine Cass, his nephew, Andrew Benson, and his special friend Marissa Cruz-Long.
