There are hundreds of people in Tucson and southern Arizona who never had the pleasure of meeting Catherine but owe much to her nonetheless.  Others who met her through her work with the lupus education/support organization she founded know her as an endless font of information about the disease and TLC for those who were afraid, angry, confused, in need of an ear or a shoulder, or whatever, whether a person diagnosed with the disease, or a family member.  She was always ready, willing and able to do whatever was possible to aid anyone in need. 
I can't imagine the number of phone calls she must have answered, the envelopes packed with good sense information she mailed out, her near constant smile and empathy shared with so many who will ever be in her debt.  Without her,  the level of pain and suffering in the southern Arizona autoimmune disease community would have been much greater.  Every city ideally would have their own Catherine Meyer.  We in Tucson are very fortunate to have actually had her to forge the path for us.


What to say about the sweetest woman who was like another grandmother to me? She and her husband were our back door neighbors and treated us like family! She was so kind to us throughout the years and we loved her very, very much. She always had open arms and an open heart to those around her and she will be greatly missed! I hope she is resting in peace and I know my mom was there to welcome her into heaven.

Dear Mike & Terry, Mary, Jim & Marilee, and Bob & Brooke,
It’s hard to put into words how much your dear mom meant to me.  I can’t actually remember my first memory of Catherine, since she was already part of my life when I was still in the womb.  However I recall stories from her and my parents about our moms out trimming the shared hedges, in-between our two houses, so they could have their social time together (while my mom was very pregnant).  Catherine had to be the most hospitable person I’ve ever known.  Anytime was a good time to come for a visit and a treat to eat.  Our talks were special and meaningful, plus down right good advice was always plentiful.  Sitting in the kitchen, I was often amazed at how many times the phone could ring and how many lives Catherine could touch with her caring spirit, wisdom, sound advice, and very funny stories.  No topic was off limits for Catherine and what a comfort that was for a young girl, teenager, and eventually an adult.  Catherine exemplified good old-fashion work ethic, character, generosity, charity, and faith in action.  Before Dave and I married in 2009, we enjoyed our 1st Valentine’s weekend at your mom’s home and Dave came to love her too.  Catherine has been a highlight in this life and I’m forever grateful to God for the memories of knowing her and the family she loved so much.

          My heart grieves at the loss of this wonderful woman.  There was no one like her in my world.  She opened her heart, home, and family to me in my freshman year at the UofA, and taught a self-absorbed, confused kid how to love people.  Many of my life's brightest moments include Catherine , her husband Wil, and her wonderful Meyer clan of Mike, Mary Kay, Jim, Bob, and their wonderful spouses at their and our family events -- weddings, monsoon-drenched games in Arizona Stadium, [er, um ASU] graduations (Mitch's fault!), New Year's Eve at the DM O-Club, 50th Wedding Anniversary, and even Wil's wake and funeral.  
          A woman of the strongest religious faith, Catherine could also correct behavior, when necessary, in her own inimitable style:  "Damn you, Chris Brooks!  Are you wearing a wet swimsuit in my wooden chair?!"  or (Christmas 1976): "You boys didn't stir that Divinity right.  It's gone all to hell!"  All said with a wry smile that made you realize that she understood the imperfections in us all,  loved us unconditionally, and made us want to repent swiftly. 
          Simply put, Catherine was love.  I'll never get over her, and I'll never want to.  To me, she was the model woman and mother who radiated compassion for others in all she did.  To the greater Meyer clan -- thank you for sharing Catherine with my brother and me for so many years, and for opening your hearts to us!  We will always love and never forget her and you!
