

Donald Frederick Snyder passed away March 23, 2012. A Tucson resident since 1978, he was born November 16, 1922 in Ardenheim, PA. Don attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh for 2 years and worked as a commercial artist before enrolling at Carnegie Mellon University. After 1 year of school, Don enlisted in the US Army, serving as a sergeant in the 288th Forward Observation Battalion under General Patton’s 3rd Army. After discharge in 1946 he married Mary Jane Sember and returned to Carnegie Mellon, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design. He embarked on a lifelong career in interior design with Mary Jane. They owned Don Snyder Interiors in Pittsburgh for 25 years until they moved to Tucson where they continued creating beautiful custom draperies in their business known as Artistry in Cloth for 30 years. Don was a gifted and talented artist who enjoyed oil and pastel painting until the end of his life. He loved gardening and created beautiful flower arrangements. He was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Jane and siblings William Snyder, Hazel Bartolet, Wayne Snyder and Chester Snyder. He is survived by his son, Donald A. Snyder of Tucson, (Jonny Sue), granddaughters Rachel and Carly and his daughter Susan Carr (Duane) of Silver Spring, MD, grandsons Michael Stanton (Kara), Andrew (Daisy) and granddaughter Erin Long (Ricky). A memorial service will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary, 5801 E. Grant Rd., on Sat, March 31 at 10:00 am. Donations in Don’s memory may be made to Disabled American Veterans (dav.org) or the U of AZ Sarver Heart Center (heart.arizona.edu).
