As I grew up, Mrs. Lytle was a role model for me. I would come by in the morning before school and watch her preparing breakfast, putting out vitamins, and turning a blind eye as Carrie fed her eggs to the dog. I remember learning how to make stamps cut from potatoes at her table. She was there to pick me up when I fainted after starting my period while buying books for high school, giving me a heating pad to keep on my abdomen. When she volunteered in the classroom, I felt special because I knew her – and I still do. When my parents would fight, she’d take me in, even if Carrie wasn’t home. We talked napkins and politics. I know about UNICEF because of her. As I grew older, she asked me to call her Biz, but she will always be Mrs. Lytle. She was a star whose light continues to shine.
