Freddie D. Edwards


Freddie the 7th child of Foster L. Edwards and Josephine Lassere. He was born and raised in New Orleans LA. He dropped out of school to join the military in 1947. After serving 3 years he left the military returned to New Orleans to go back to school then graduated from James S. Clark High School. He Married Mary-gold Van Buren on January 30th 1954. From that union 5 daughters were Born. Wanda Jean, Julie Ann, Patricia Yvonne, Vannessa Elosie, and Cynthia Kim. Much later his son Rasheem Freddie was adopted into the family.

Freddie rejoined the Army in 1954 after he graduated he served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was trained in the military to be a operating specialists, a cook, and in strategic communication. While serving his country he was awarded Good Conduct Medal (3 Awd), A National Defense Service Medal w/bronze OLC. Korean Service Medal w/5 bronze stars, Vietnam Service medal w/2 bronze stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Korean Presidential unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and also Buffalo Soldiers Award.

He retired from Military Service on August 31, 1971, from Ft. Huachuca, AZ. He relocated to Tucson Arizona in November 1971 where he was employed by the United States Postal Service, and retired from there in 1992, he lived in Tucson until his death March 30, 2021.

Freddie was a peoples person, he never met a stranger and was friendly to everyone he encountered. He loved teaching he was always traveling to the National Baptist Convention and taught Christian Education and Sunday School for years at Mount Calvary Baptist church, where he also served at one time as a head Deacon and also a trustee. Building and woodwork was a hobby of his, he added two rooms to his house a library and a family room for his five girls. He also loved music and passed his loves and hobbies on to his daughters.

He was proceeded in death by his father Foster L. Edwards, mother Josephine Lassare Edwards, 4 brothers, 3 sisters, daughter Patricia Y. Taylor, and two grand sons, Eric Q. Payne Jr. and Ahmad Wali Jones. He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Mary-gold V.B. Edwards, his daughters Wanda J. Edwards, Julie A.Cooper (Van), Vannessa E. Moses (William), Cynthia K. Payne (Eric) and his son Rasheem F. Edwards (?) His sisters Vernice Woodard, Deloris Jermaine, Eulalia Carter, his brothers Merlin Edwards Sr (Marissa), Issac Carter, his god children Byron Johnson, and Quinnise Pettway, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. .................................................................................................................................................
